"With great pleasure, I listened to this new recording by Marco's quintet. It's beautiful music with a fantastic atmosphere, played by five excellent musicians who create a cohesive band sound together. Marco's compositions are wonderful, providing each musician ample room to showcase their individual talents. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Marco's music and his group, and I wish them a bright musical future together."
– Rob van Bavel (dutch pianist and educator)
"In recent years, music has guided me to diverse places and inspiring environments. Each new setting revealed different facets of reality and provided fresh perspectives on my certainties and visions. The album "Detached Views" explores how leaving familiar spaces and discovering new homes can open up new viewpoints. Each composition is inspired by a specific event, capturing and narrating a piece of that journey."
– Marco Ullstein
MARCO ULLSTEIN QUINTET
ALBUM RELEASE TOUR - DETACHED VIEWS
PRESSTEXT
After winning the Grachtenfestival Jazz Competition in 2023 and achieving various successes on international stages and competitions, the Marco Ullstein Quintet is pleased to present their debut album, Detached Views, which will be released in August 30th 2024. In their music, the international band members who started the formation in The Hague in 2022 combine modern elements with their passion for traditional jazz to create a unique sound realised through vibraphone, tenor sax, guitar, bass, and drums.
The compositions of vibraphonist and bandleader Marco Ullstein are influenced by various genres and his classical music background. Elements such as storytelling through colorful arrangements, while leaving space for each musician's character and individual expression, take the audience on a musical journey full of melodic and rhythmic contrasts and diversity - or, as De Telegraaf writes, "...the attendees were transported note by note into another world.“
The music of their album Detached Views draws inspiration from specific events and delves into emotional connections to various environments, exploring how leaving familiar spaces and discovering new homes can open up new perspectives in life.

"It was as if the dozens of attendees in Amsterdam's Tolhuistuin were transported note by note into another world"
– De Telegraaf
"This highly accomplished quintet, [...] played with great dynamics and beautiful colors under the direction of their humble leader Marco Ullstein. I can't wait to hear them play again [...]!“
– Jury chairman Grachtenfestival Jazz competition Sander Grande
"Marco Ullstein Quintet is a band with character and with characters (musicians) whom each get enough space to perform as an individual. The mature improvisations of Marco and of the saxophone - and guitar player are impressive. The band play is top! Your own repertoire and your own sound makes this band unique!"
– Jury EU Jazz Award Heerlen
